Congratulations to the 4th year boys and the 2nd/3rd year girls who won the inaugural battle of the years tournament seeing of stiff competition in the form of LIT boys & 4th year girls. All the teams involved would like to thank the Freshers who came up with the idea & organised the event from start to finish. Well done Cathy, Marie, Mike & Mike! April 4th - Clubs & Socs Hustings The Hustings for Best Club & Best Event will take place in FG042 (Foundation Building) from 6pm sharp. come along & support your club as we make our case for the above two awards. Mar 31st 2006 - Club AGM * note change of time The club AGM will take place on Wed 5th April in the PESS at 20:30 (new time). All club members are encouraged to attend as new policies are being voted on that will affect you. There is a club night out afterwards, around 21:30, where the awards for Battle of the Years (come on the 4th years!!!), MVP & MIP (Most Improved Player) for each team will be presented. The Club night out will begin in the Stables where refreshments will be served. March 31st 2006 - Club Nominated in Two Categories After a hectic year on and off the court the Basketball Club has been nominated for two Clubs & Socs awards Best Club & Best Event for the Intervarsities. Hustings will take place on Wednesday April 5th, venue to be confirmed. All club members are invited to attend wearing yellow hoodies or White Varsities shirts. March 30th 2006 - Battle of the Years Update All the pool games have been played and after some hotly contested encounters the finals will take place next Tuesday April 4th in the Arena. A new departure for the club this year sees the Freshers organise a Battle of the Years Tournament. March 12th 2006 - Varsities Update Elation & heartache as the girls win but the boys lose in a close fought final encounter with UCD. This was only the boys second appearance in the final since UL have been allowed play in the Varsities and it produced what was undoubtedly the game of the tournament (even if we did get the wrong result!) Meeting for all liaison officers in the Arena at 1pm on Thursday for a final run through. Keep an eye on the varsities web site for full details of the weekend. February 24th 2006 - Cup Update Having seen off Tralee in the last round the women's squad faced NUIG in todays semi final. After a slow start the girls found their feet and went on to win convincingly. They now face IT Sligo in the cup final. February 9th 2006 - Both Varsity Squads named Congratulations to the 24 players who will make up this years Varsity teams. Both sets of coaches stated that it was one of the hardest decisions to make, especially for the girls team who have been getting record numbers to training. Competition has been fierce for every spot and the coaches are confident they have the best squads available. Extra training dates will be scheduled between now and March, so keep your eye on your email. February 8th 2006 - Cup Update, Split results Two cup games were hosted by UL on wednesday & both turned out to be close encounters. First up were the boys who let a 14 point half time lead slip away to be beaten by a basket tipped in on the buzzer. Final score UL 71 UCC 72.The girls faced Carlow next, they ran into an early lead but allowed Carlow back into the game in the last quarter. Experience told as UL held on to win by 3 points, UL 56 Carlow IT 53. The girls will now travel to Tralee for the next round of the cup. February 6th 2006 - Cup Update Congratulations to the girls who beat Waterford in the preliminary round of the cup, 50 - 36. They will now face IT Carlow in the first round proper on Wednesday 8th Feb in the Arena. The men's team will face UCC in the 2nd round of the Cup on wednesday also. Good luck to all involved! February 6th 2006 - Women v's Waterford IT Good luck to the womens team as they open their cup campaign against Waterford IT in the arena at 1.30pm today. January 31st 2006 - Club Trip Italy At long last the time has come for our trip away, see you all in the airport at 5pm. January 28th/29th 2006 - National Cup Congratulations to the Senior UL Aughinish team who won their 3 cup final in 4 years this weekend.Commiserations to the U19 team who were beaten by Killester despite the best attempts of Louise Galvin (2nd yr Physio) to keep her team in with a fighting chance. The mens game was as nail bitingly close as in previous years with only a basket separating the teams on the final whistle. Limerick Lions had lead for the most of the second half but couldn't gain enough of a lead to shake off the persistent UCC Demons. Hard luck lads! January 28th 2006 - National Cup Good luck to the UL Aughinish U19s as the face Killester in their cup final on Saturday evening.On Sunday the UL Aughinish Senior women also face Killester while the Limerick Lions will battle against UCC Demons for Cup honours. The club would like to wish all the teams, especially our college teammates, the best of luck - we'll be there to cheer you on. January 25th 2006 - Men v's Colaiste Stiofan Naofa Well done to the senior mens team who recorded their first victory of the Cup campaign on a 74 - 35 scoreline January 23rd 2006 - Training Resumes Exams are over - yipee! Training resumes for all teams as normal this week January 16th 2006 - All Star Congratulations to Neil Campbell who was selected to participate in the SuperLeague All Star game on Friday 27th January. The All Star game will pit the best players from the Mens SuperLeague Northern Conference against the best players from the Mens SuperLeague Southern Conference. Members of the public voted for the best 12 players & a coach for each team & our Neil was one of them! Tickets for the game, which is a fundraiser for Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY), to aid their battle on Sudden Cardiac Death (SCD) , can be purchased from Basketball Ireland. January 16th 2006 - National Cup Well done to the girls on the U19 & Senior UL Aughinish club team who both won their respective semi finals this past weekend. The U19's beat Sligo All Stars 82-51, they'll go on to face a strong Killester team in the finals in two weekends time. The Senior Team beat Carna Mercy 68 - 44, they will also face Killester in a repeat of last years final where Killester ended UL's 40+ game winning streak. UL will be hoping to reverse that result when they next meet. Limerick Lions will also star in the finals weekend as they saw off the challenge of Killester 70-63. They will face UCC Demons in the finals who put paid to Merry Monk Ballina's cup hopes. With three Limerick teams in the finals and plenty of UL college players involved in the action it promises to be a great weekend for Limerick basketball. January 14th/ 15th 2006 - National Cup This weekend see's the cup semi finals take place in the National Arena, Tallaght. We'd like to wish all our players the best of luck as they represent their home clubs. First up is the U19 girls semi final where UL Aughinish take on last years reigning champions Sligo All Stars. Louise Galvin (2nd yr Physio), Sorcha Holmes (1st yr Language & Culture) & Emma Mullane (1st yr Industrial Chemistry) will all be hoping their team makes it to the finals weekend. Neil Campbell (Post Grad), Aidan Holden (4th yr Public Admin) & Stephen King (2nd yr PE) all line out for Limerick Lions in their semi final against Killester from Dublin Paul Freeman (4th yr CS) transferred this season from Limerick Lions back to his home club, Merry Monk Ballina. They will face Demons from Cork in the second semi final & if both teams get the result they are hoping for he could end up facing his old team & college team mates in the final in two weekends time. Dec 17th 2005 - Intervarsity Draw made The draw has been made for this year's Intervarsities.The women's team will face NUIG, IT Carlow, UU Coleraine & IT Tralee in their pool games.The men's team will face CIT, Garda College, IT Tallaght & NUI Maynooth in their pool games.Full details will be posted in a new varsity section early in the new year. Dec 16th 2005 - League Semi Finals Congratulations to the womens team who defeated TCD 60 - 50 in tonights League Semi Final. The difference between the teams was almost twenty points but a series of 3 pointers by TCD in the dying minutes narrowed the final difference.The girls will face the winners of tomorrows semi final, which will see UCC play DCU, on Sunday. Good luck to the Women's team as they face TCD in the league semi finals later tonight. Dec 14th 2005 - UL v UCC Congratulations to the women's squad who ran out 20 point winners against a depleted UCC team. The men's team struggled to capitalise against a 5 man UCC team who overcame them in the dying minutes of the game. These games ended the regular league season for the teams. The women head to Dublin on Friday night to contest for League Final honours. The men are our of League contention and will focus on the Intervarsities & the Championship in the New Year. Dec 12th 2005 - Club Trip to Europe Details of next years club trip abroad have been confirmed. We will be heading to Northern Italy during the 3 week break to play against teams in the Florence region. Deposits & copies of your passport to be given to club Treasurer Tanya Pidgeon. Dec 1st 2005 - UL v CIT The mens team had a tug of war battle with CIT over who would take the points away from this game. In a closely fought encounter the lead was a single basket on a number of occasions. However WIT's experience stood to them as them ran out winners on a flattering 101 - 71 scoreline. The womens team have enough players to field an almost entirely different team for each game in this campaign! This team came away with the points on a 67 - 55 scoreline. Final conference standings will be determined by the outcome of the UCC game which UL need to win well to top the table heading into the league final weekends. Nov 29th 2005 - UL v WIT Congratulations to the girls team who won today away to WIT by a comfortable 10 point margin (59 - 49). The ocaches used this game to introduce players from the Fresher squad to Senior League matches. The first year aquitted themselves well - the future looks bright for womens basketball in UL. Best on the day were Jacqui Hurley & Cathy Grant. The boys lost their encounter. Nov 20th 2005 - Freshers Tournament Congratulations to the UL Fresher A team who overcame the UL Fresher B team in the Intervarsity Finals this afternoon. The game was tied going into the second half but the experience & depth on the Fresher A team helped them to hang on for victory. Well done to all especially the coaches on the day Noreen O'Connell & Jacqui Hurley. Congratulations also to the Fresher Boys team who defeated a strong NUIG side to lift the second trophy of the afternoon for the host club. Senior player Richie Lacken has been coaching this team for the past number of weeks and has done a fantastic job - Well Done to all involved. Nov 20th 2005 - Freshers Tournament History will be made later today as no fewer than 3 UL teams will compete in the Fresher Intervarsity finals. In the womens final UL1 will play UL2. So high has the demand been for Fresher girls basketball that 2 teams were entered into the event for the first time & both teams made it through to the final. The boys will also play in the final against NUIG - good luck to you all! Nov 18th 2005 - UL v UCC Both UL teams suffered losses today at the hands of UCC. The men went down 80 - 40 while the women lost 63 - 50. Nov 17th 2005 - Fresher IV The club would like to wish their Fresher teams the best of luck this weekend as they prepare for their first Intervarsity event. Interest has been so high from the girls that two full squads have been entered into the competition for the first time ever. Nov 16th 2005 - UL v CIT Congratulations to the girls team who defeated CIT 69 -34. The boys team were not as fortunate going down 67 - 103 Nov 15th 2005 - Meetings Coaches Meeting - There is a coaches meeting on Monday 21st November in the arena classroom from 19:00 to 20:00. All freshers and senior coaches are expected to attend. Club Meeting - There will be a club meeting on Monday 21st November from 20:00 to 21:00 in the arena classroom for all fresher & senior players. This will be followed by a club night out in the Arena Sports Bar and the Lodge so come ready to go! Nov 4th 2005 - Freshers v UCC Both Fresher squads travelled down to UCC for their first competitive fixture of the season in preparation for their upcoming InterVarsities in UL later on this month. Congratulations to the girls who won on a decisive 51-28 scoreline, the future of girls basketball in UL looks set to continue being a force to be reckoned with. The boys unfortunately came out the wrong side of a 15 point loss & will look to improve before they face UCC again in a fortnights time. Nov 1st 2005 - Table Officials Course Interested in learning how to be a table official? Want a chance to make some money??? We are running a Table Officials course on Wednesday 16th of November from 18:00 to 21:00 in the Arena, cost €5 per person. If you are interested in taking part please email Ronan Qualified table officials will be required for the Fresher Tournament in November and the Varsity Tournament in March, these will be paid positions.There is a coaches meeting on Monday 21st November in the arena classroom from 19:00 to 20:00. All fresher and senior coaches are expected to attend. Oct 26th 2005 - UL v WIT Congratulations to both Men's & Women's teams who recorded league victories at home against WIT. The women ran out winners 71-24 while the men had to keep fighting to the very end before emerging victorious on a 54-45 scoreline. Match report to follow.
